Mexico, as co-host, has played 11 friendlies since July 2025, given it hasn’t had to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. They’ve drawn six of those games and only lost two, 0-4 to Colombia and 1-2 to Paraguay. However, they’ll be heading into a home tournament with a bitter sense of dissatisfaction, as they’ve only won three games in this span.

“El Tricolor” will face the Czech Republic, South Korea, and its first opponent, South Africa, after being drawn into Group A. Their first match probably represents their best chance of picking up three points, and a win could give them the momentum to go on to top the group, backing up their current odds as marginal favorites to win Group A.

Although Javier Aguirre hasn’t yet revealed his 26-man World Cup roster, European football fans will be familiar with a few names that are expected to be listed. Raúl Jiménez of Fulham is probably going to play, while Santiago Giménez, who joined AC Milan a year and a half ago, is familiar to Serie A enthusiasts.

A large portion of Mexico’s team is probably composed of players from Liga MX, the country’s domestic league. While some football fans may not recognize these players right away, Aguirre has plenty of great options. Obed Vargas, a 20-year-old who joined Atlético Madrid earlier this year, is one player to keep an eye out for. If he makes the final roster, he may have a significant influence.

Since the conclusion of the CAF qualification campaign in October 2025, South Africa has known it would participate in the 2026 World Cup. They went ahead of Nigeria and Benin by one point to win Group C. “Bafana Bafana” had a difficult campaign, but they persevered and made it to their first World Cup finals since hosting in 2010.

South Africa has played eight games since that qualifying, winning four of them. They faced African opponents in six of those games, and they remained winless in both of their most recent encounters with Panama. Although South Africa is expected to have a difficult summer tournament, the expansion to 48 teams may give it a chance to reach the knockout stages for the first time in its history.

Hugo Broos hasn’t yet announced his final World Cup team either, but a few players from the English leagues may be included in the 26-man roster. The most well-known player is Burnley’s Lyle Foster, but there’s also a lot of interest in the two Championship players, Luke Le Roux of Portsmouth and Tylon Smith of QPR, who were both included in the squad for the most recent friendlies against Panama.

Goals appear to be a problem for “Bafana Bafana,” as Themba Zwane leads the team with just 12 goals in as many as 53 caps, followed by Foster with 10 in 26. The absence of a consistent goal scorer could be crucial this summer, since no other player used by Broos has scored more than nine goals for his nation.

Head-to-head

There have been only two meetings between these two countries, and Mexico has never prevailed in either. Since the 2010 World Cup, which also served as the tournament’s opening match and ended in a 1-1 tie, they haven’t faced each other. At the 2005 Gold Cup, South Africa defeated them 2-1 in their only other encounter.
