In Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the Philadelphia Eagles thrashed the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, preventing the Chiefs from becoming the NFL’s first-ever three-peat Super Bowl champions.
The Chiefs’ historic status and the fact that Philadelphia lost 35-38 in their last Super Bowl matchup two years ago didn’t deter the Eagles from playing well. Over the Chiefs’ head, Philadelphia grabbed the opportunity to write its own version of American football history. The Eagles defied the odds of bookies for the best American football online betting too. The Chiefs were 1.5-point favorites in the latest Chiefs vs. Eagles odds prior to the Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs were also moneyline favorites.
Patrick Mahomes, the standout quarterback for the Chiefs, was jumpy from the beginning and had to run for his life throughout the game, which was the result of the Eagles’ defense. With six sacks, the Eagles were one sack short of the Super Bowl record. The game seemed closer than it actually was because of two touchdown throws from Mahomes in the last three minutes.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts played with poise and completed 17-for-22 passing for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one rushing score, except for one poor interception against a free blitzer. With 11 attempts and 72 yards on the ground, he was the game’s top rusher. He found DeVonta Smith (four catches, 69 yards) on a go route down the seam for a 46-yard touchdown to make it 34-0 after the Eagles regained control of the game late in the third quarter. At that moment, it was all over.
Saquon Barkley of Eagles Surpasses Terrell Davis’ 26-Year NFL Record
Saquon Barkley’s remarkable season remained strong until the very end. In Super Bowl LIX, the running back for the Philadelphia Eagles broke Terrell Davis’ record for the most yards from scrimmage in a season (including the postseason), setting an NFL record. With a four-yard run on the opening play from scrimmage, he set a new record. In the Eagles’ rout of the Chiefs, he finished with 31 touches and 97 total yards (57 rushing and 40 receiving).
Barkley needed three more to surpass Davis for the season’s most scrimmage yards, having started the day with 2,760 and being second on the all-time list for the season’s most scrimmage yards. With 2,762 yards in 1998, Davis had previously established the record, which remained in place for 26 years. Davis gained 286 receiving yards and 2,476 rushing yards during that season’s Denver Broncos Super Bowl victory.
