Australian TV Reporter Apologises After Slurred Winter Olympics Broadcast

Publication date:

Channel Nine journalist Danika Mason became an unexpected story at the Winter Olympics after a live broadcast went viral for all the wrong reasons. During the segment, Mason appeared to struggle with her words, wandered onto topics that had nothing to do with sport, all before attempting to deliver the actual update.

The clip spread fast, and the reactions ranged from genuine concern to people finding the whole thing pretty funny. Mason didn’t try to hide from it, either. She admitted she’d had a drink before going on air, hadn’t eaten dinner, and acknowledged that the cold and altitude hadn’t helped.

When she appeared on the programme on Thursday to address it properly, she described herself as “a little bit embarrassed” and was straightforward about having misjudged the situation. There were elaborate excuses, just an admission that she got it wrong.

‘Too Unprofessional to Brush Aside’

Her co-hosts backed her up, making clear the broadcast wasn’t typical of how she operates. Even Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighed in, pointing to fatigue and jet lag as context and asking viewers to keep some perspective.

Social media, however, was split on the matter, with some laughing it off and others seeing it as too unprofessional to brush aside. Mason thanked those who sent supportive messages and was clear that none of it reflected how she normally works.

It’s created a broader conversation about what journalists are actually dealing with when they report from high-altitude winter events under pressure and in brutal conditions.
