As Elon Musk’s father, Errol, stated, his billionaire son and also the richest man in the world (according to Forbes) would like to purchase Liverpool F.C., one of the most prominent football teams on the globe. In an interview with the UK’s Times Radio, Errol said: “Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to; yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.”
Liverpool is the city where Elon Musk’s grandmother was born, and several of his relatives still reside there. “We were fortunate enough to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family.” Errol continued, confirming that the Musks truly have relatives in the city located in the Merseyside county in northwest England. “So, we’re attached to Liverpool, you know.”
Who Owns Liverpool F.C. Right Now?
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owner of Liverpool F.C., has previously welcomed outside investment but hasn’t stated that it wishes to sell. The club was purchased by FSG in 2010 for £300 million, or about $380 million in today’s currency. A full sale was considered in late 2022 but was canceled the following year. In 2021, RedBird Capital acquired an 11% share in FSG, valuing Liverpool F.C.’s parent firm at more than $7 billion. The NBA superstar, LeBron James, exchanged his ownership of Liverpool for stock in FSG as part of that agreement. Dynasty Equity, a private equity group, paid $200 million in 2023 to purchase a minor percentage share in Liverpool F.C. alone.
Great days happened to Liverpool F.C. under FSG. One season after winning the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool won its first English league title in 30 years in 2020, solidifying its position as one of Europe’s top clubs under an American multinational sports holding conglomerate from Delaware, which also owns, among other sports entities, the Boston Red Sox (MLB) and Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL).
Right now, the “Reds” are at the top of the Premier League standings, having won the league 19 times, and the Champions League, which they have won six times. Interestingly, no Premier League betting site has put much stock in Liverpool F.C. at the start of the season, as the odds favored Manchester City F.C. and Arsenal F.C. more than them.
