Although it’s the 114th edition of the tournament, female athletes didn’t get their competition and disciplines separately until 1906, so as far as women are concerned, the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships is the 104th edition of the most coveted yearly competition in the figure skating world, next to the Winter Olympics.

This and all previous World Figure Skating Championships are organized by the ISU, the worldwide governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, which is situated in Switzerland and is one of the oldest international sports federations. The U.S. Figure Skating, the national governing body for figure skating in the United States, will assist ISU in arranging the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships because it will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, this year.

Where and When Will the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships Be Held?

For the first time since 2016, the World Figure Skating Championships will be held in Boston. About 200 of the best skaters in the world from 50 different countries will compete at TD Garden from March 25–30, 2025. Each skating federation’s entrance quotas to the 2026 World Championships and Winter Olympics will be decided by this competition. The participants will compete in four categories: men, women, pairs, and ice dance. Each, except for ice dance, will vie for medals through two segments (programs): short program and free skating. Ice dance’s segment will be rhythm dance. There’s also a non-competitive segment in the tournament—an exhibition gala—showcasing all the medal winners from all four categories, thinking creatively on the ice to entertain the audience, which is always held on the last competition day and by which the event is closed.

There’s no prize pool set for the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships, unlike some other international competitions, such as the ISU Grand Prix Series. Skaters are eligible to receive prize money depending on placement at the World Figure Skating Championships from their native federation.

Which Skaters Will Take Part in the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships?

Skaters who reached the minimum technical elements score (TES) requirements and turned 17 before July 1, 2024, are eligible to compete in the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships. As of 2010, qualifying rounds were no longer used. If TESs were earned at senior-level ISU-recognized international competitions during the current season, at least 21 days prior to the first official practice day of the specified World Championships, or the prior season, the ISU will accept them for the short and free programs.

Some names will undoubtedly appear on the ice rink at the TD Garden, even if the complete list of competitors who met the TES requirements to compete at the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships hasn’t yet been revealed. Reigning World Men’s Singles Champion Ilya Malinin (USA), reigning World Women’s Singles Champion Kaori Sakamoto (Japan), reigning World Ice Dance Champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA), and reigning World Pair Champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps (Canada) are among the anticipated competitors, as some federations have started revealing their selections in December 2024.

Features of the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships

A short program for women and pairs will kick off the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships on March 26 (11:05 a.m. local time), while the event will be closed by the Exhibition Gala on March 30 (2 p.m. local time).

Below is the competition schedule and the timetable, along with the number of participants for each category:

Who’ll Win the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships?

For sure, the medalists from the previous edition in all categories will be the biggest favorites in Boston. That’s because it’s quite rare for a random competitor to win in figure skating because the skill and reputation are built over years. There are always clear favorites in figure skating.

Many sportsbook sites provide wagers on figure skating in general, not only for the World Figure Skating Championships, particularly during the Olympics. However, these are mostly the sportsbooks with the finest reputation in the niche, like those on this list of the best bookmakers, not all. There’s usually a growth in the number of interested players. In figure skating, wagering on the winner is the most common kind of wagering. It’s easy: a number of candidates are listed in the line, often no more than eight or 10, and each one has a fictitious chance of winning based on the sum of two programs. Additionally, there’s the top 3 bet, total points bet, and so on. You’ll understand what we mean when the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships odds are released by bookmakers.

The Swede Ulrich Salchow has won the most men’s titles at the World Figure Skating Championships: 10 (between 1901 and 1911). As for women, that would be Sonja Henie of Norway, also 10, between 1927 and 1936.

Over 300 million people watch the World Figure Skating Championships on television every year. The last time the United States hosted the World Championships, Boston did it in 2016. Around 108,000 fans attended the sold-out performances by athletes from all over the world back then.

Every significant event of the 2024–25 figure skating season in the USA, from the Grand Prix Series to the World Championships in Boston, will be televised by NBC Sports and Peacock. Other countries will also broadcast the event by TV stations that purchased the rights to do so.
