This honor-filled men’s golf event is jointly organized by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA of America)—an American organization of golf professionals—and Ryder Cup Europe—a joint venture of the PGA European Tour, the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Ryder Cup committee, i.e., the organization that manages the European side of the Ryder Cup.
Where Will the 2025 Ryder Cup Be Held?
The tournament will be played at Bethpage Black Course (Bethpage State Park, with the participation of 24 golfers spread among 2 teams—Team Europe and Team USA—each consisting of 12 players.
The Ryder Cup is unique in that it has no prize money. Players don’t receive financial compensation for competing; instead, they play for national/team honor, prestige, and legacy. The 2025 Ryder Cup will be no exception.
Which Teams Will Take Part in the 2025 Ryder Cup?
If you wonder how Team USA and Team Europe recruit players for the Ryder Cup, here’s all the info you’d need. This is a simplified qualification process.
Team USA
- 6 automatic qualifiers who earn spots through the Ryder Cup points list (points based on performances in PGA Tour events and majors).
- 6 picks selected by the U.S. team captain.
Team Europe
- 3 automatic qualifiers from the European Points List (based on DP World Tour results).
- 3 automatic qualifiers from the World Points List (based on global rankings/performances).
- 6 picks selected by the European team captain.
At this stage (August 2025), the exact player rosters are still to be finalized because qualification will run through the summer season of golf.
Features of the 2025 Ryder Cup
The 2025 Ryder Cup is played over 3 days of competition, preceded by a practice day:
- Day 0 (Practice Day): Usually the day before the first official matches (exact date in 2025 TBD).
- Day 1 – Friday: Morning and afternoon sessions of team matches.
- Day 2 – Saturday: Morning and afternoon sessions of team matches.
- Day 3 – Sunday: Singles matches (all players compete individually).
Let’s explain the match format & system
- Total matches: 28 points available over 3 days.
- Scoring system: Match play – a player/team wins a point for each match. Matches can be halved if tied after 18 holes (0.5 points each). The first team to reach 14½ points wins the Ryder Cup. If the defending champion reaches 14 points, they retain the Cup.
From this, it’s clear that the Ryder Cup doesn’t use a traditional elimination system. It’s rather a round-robin/match play points system over 3 days: teams earn points in foursomes, fourball, and singles matches. All players compete in scheduled matches, and no team or player is eliminated during the tournament. In other words, it’s a team points-based match play format.
Who’ll Win the 2025 Ryder Cup?
The Ryder Cup is notoriously unpredictable, but based on recent form, rankings, and team strength, Team USA seems like a bigger favorite, if for nothing else than for having more top-5 world-ranked players compared to Europe.
Popular platforms for betting on golf are usually the best bookmakers on the market in general:
- Global: Bet365, William Hill, Paddy Power, DraftKings
- USA: FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook
- Europe: Betfair, Unibet, 888Sport
Most popular golf bets include outright winner, match winners, session winners, and total points.
The Ryder Cup was originally played biennially in odd years. In 1979, Europe became the official competitor instead of Great Britain & Ireland. The USA dominates historically, but Europe has had strong runs. The global audience often exceeds 100 million viewers. The 2018 and 2023 editions saw record TV ratings in Europe and the USA, boosted by social media engagement.
