Gu Beaten By Gremaud To Olympic Gold In Women’s Freeski Slopestyle

Publication date:

Mathilde Gremaud successfully defended her Olympic title in women’s freeski slopestyle, beating Eileen Gu to gold at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games in Livigno. The Swiss skier finished top after a high-level final in the Italian Alps, edging out Gu of China, who took silver for the second straight Olympics.

Canada’s Megan Oldham claimed bronze despite crashing heavily during her second run. Gu set the early pace with a strong opening run, scoring 86.58 to move into the lead. However, a mistake at the start of her final run ended her chances of upgrading silver to gold, leaving the door open for Gremaud.

Gremaud capitalised with three composed and technically demanding runs. She posted the highest score of the event, 86.96, built around a mix of difficult rail work and large jumps, including a new trick that has not previously been landed by a woman in Olympic competition.

Gu Nailed a Nose Butter Double Cork 1260 in the Final

The 25-year-old opened the final by landing a nose butter double cork 1260, before backing it up with cleaner, more controlled skiing across the rest of the course. She finished her final descent draped in the Swiss flag, knowing gold was already secured.

Oldham recovered from her second-run crash with a steadier third attempt, earning a score of 76.46 to take bronze. The medal ceremony saw Swiss, Chinese and Canadian flags filling the stands, with Britain’s Princess Anne presenting the medals.

For Gu, the result follows her Beijing 2022 performance, where she won silver in slopestyle alongside golds in big air and halfpipe. The 22-year-old has said during these Games that she feels she has little left to prove and will still defend her other Olympic titles later in the programme.
