The 41-year-old American has now undergone five surgeries since suffering a complex tibia fracture during the women’s downhill final on February 8. Her latest procedure, which lasted more than six hours, left her with around 20 screws embedded in the bone to stabilise the break.
“I’m bionic for real now,” Vonn joked on social media, posting the X-ray that highlights just how extensive the repair work has been.
Five Surgeries and Counting
Vonn’s crash came just days after she had torn the ACL in her left knee in a separate fall at Crans-Montana. Despite the ligament injury, she chose to compete at the Games. Thirteen seconds into her downhill run, she clipped a gate, lost control and was thrown violently onto the course.
She was heard screaming in pain before being airlifted from the mountain. Doctors later confirmed a complex fracture that required immediate surgery.
After initially being discharged following her fourth operation, Vonn underwent a fifth procedure back in the United States. She admitted recovery has been difficult, describing the pain as hard to manage and progress as slow but steady.
No Regrets
Vonn has insisted she does not regret lining up in Milan, maintaining that the torn ACL did not cause the crash. The former Olympic champion has even vowed to ski again one day, continuing a career already defined by comebacks and resilience.
Her body already contained titanium implants following knee reconstruction in 2024, making the latest X-ray a striking image of a champion rebuilt more than once.
Away from the slopes, Vonn has also been dealing with personal heartbreak after the death of her dog, Leo, shortly after the Olympic accident.
