The 20-year-old barely had time to process her score before the emotion took over. Throwing her arms up and grinning from ear to ear, she followed the expletive-laden outburst with a loud “Yes!” as the crowd roared in response.
It was raw and totally unscripted. Not only that, but it was entirely fitting for an athlete who had just produced the skate of her life.

Coming From Behind to Win

Liu entered the free programme in third place after Tuesday’s short programme, knowing she needed something special to overhaul the leaders. What followed was exactly that – a confident, technically sharp routine packed with speed and expression.

When her final score flashed up (226.79 points overall), it was enough to push her into first place. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto, who had been sitting in gold-medal position, was edged into silver by a narrow margin.

Sakamoto, a bronze medallist at Beijing four years earlier, once again found herself on the Olympic podium, but this time one step shy of the top.

A Dramatic Turnaround in Just 4 Years

For Liu, the victory marked a dramatic turnaround from 2022, when she finished sixth. The years in between have clearly hardened her competitive edge. This time, under the brightest spotlight, she did not hesitate.

Speaking afterwards, Liu revealed how much it meant to perform in front of her inner circle. “My family is out there, my friends are out there. I had to put on a show for them,” she said, still smiling.
