Tauson vs Samsonova: prediction and bets on 2021 Charleston Open, April 12, 2021
On Monday, April 12, at 9 p.m. Moscow time, Clara Tauson from Denmark will face Russian Ludmilla Samsonova in the first round of the women’s tennis 2021 WTA Charleston Open (official name: WTA Volvo Car Open 2021). It is a matchup between two players ranked outside the top 100.
Even though Tauson was and still is in her early stages of professional tennis, the Danish player put together a strong 2020 season on clay for a player outside the top 200 at that moment. It began with a victory on the ITF circuit, where she won her first – and so far only – clay title, and continued with a fourth-round appearance at the Prague Open in mid-August. Tauson battled her way through the qualifiers to reach the main draw at Roland Garros, where she stunned Jennifer Brady in the first round before losing to Danielle Collins in the second.
An 18-year-old Dane has had made a breakthrough in 2021 with some outstanding performances leading up to her appearance at the Lyon Open in early March. In February, she won an ITF title in Altenkirchen, Germany, but few expected her to go long way as a qualifier at the Lyon Open. Winning matches against Ekaterina Aleksandrova, Camila Giorgi, and Paula Badosa only contributed to her notable WTA debut. Tauson’s only match on clay this season was a loss at the Bogota Open earlier this year, so it will be interesting to see if she can get off to a better start in this competition.
Samsonova is currently ranked 110th in the world, which is her highest ranking to date, and another couple of strong performances could help her break into the top 100. She begins her campaign against a player who has just recently broken to the verge of top 100, meaning against the rival she can measure up with. A 22-year-old Russian started the season by qualifying for the Australian Open, where she went on to win her only main draw match in the following four tournaments. Samsonova advanced to the second round of the year’s first Grand Slam with a hard-fought win over Paula Badosa before losing to Garbiñe Muguruza.
Samsonova then put in her best performance in a long time, winning back-to-back matches to earn a place in the Miami Open main draw at the end of March, then shocking Camila Giorgi and Kiki Bertens in the first two rounds. Samsonova won her opener at the Charleston Open last week before losing in the second round to Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff. We cannot talk about head-to-head matches between Tauson and Samsonova because the 102nd-ranked Tauson and the Russian, who is currently ranked 110th in the world, have never met before.
Tauson has a slight advantage at the best betting sites, which have put lower odds on her win today. However, there is not anything that gives one of these two a distinct advantage over the other.
So, we will have to go for a hard-fought match that will be played in three sets. At NordicBet, the odd of 2.40 was set for Over 2.5 Total Sets Played.
