PSV vs. Galatasaray: prediction and bets on 2021/21 Champions League, July 21, 2021
Dutch PSV Eindhoven will welcome Turkey’s Galatasaray S.K. to the Philips Stadion for the first leg of their men’s football 2020/21 UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round tie. The match will kick off on Wednesday, July 21, at 11 p.m. Moscow time.
Both teams have yet to start their domestic campaigns, with the hosts having completed four pre-season friendlies and the Turks having played in two. Of course, this is a significant step up for both teams and, while the oddsmakers have PSV as the favorite to advance to the group stage, Galatasaray have plenty of aces up their sleeve, which by no means should be overlooked in this encounter. Under Mark van Bommel, Eindhoven last had a decent European Cup appearance four years ago, while Galatasaray have been absent from the competition for a comparable amount of time.
The current form of PSV PSV have not competed in the Champions League in a long time. With only two points, the side coached then by Mark van Bommel finished last in a group that included Barcelona, Tottenham, and Inter - in 2018. ‘De Boeren’ last played in the second qualifying round in 2019, but were knocked out by Basel and have since only played in the Europa League. Last season, PSV, commanded by Roger Schmidt, advanced to the round of 32 and finished second to Ajax in the Eredivisie, albeit 16 points behind the new Dutch champions.
Mario Götze, the World Cup winner, is fit and ready for the hosts, who will once again rely on Israeli striker Zahavi’s explosiveness in the attacking third. Denzel Dumfries is set to start right-back after an outstanding summer in the Dutch National Team.
The current form of Galatasaray Galatasaray have been missing CL for a similar amount of time. The last time Istanbul’s most decorated club participated in the group stage was in 2019. They failed to reach the knockout stage (did it last time in 2013/14), finishing behind PSG, Real, and Club Brugge. Under the guidance of veteran manager Fatih Terim, ‘Cimbom’ finished second in Turkish Süper Lig last season, and they are now coming off a successful pre-season. The visitors have plenty of experience in the form of Falcao, Turan, and Babel, and while they have struggled with consistency in the past, they will be hoping to keep up their outstanding end-of-season form here.
Head-to-head encounters PSV have won three of the previous four face-to-face meetings; but, with the most recent one taking place 15 years ago, it is safe to assume that those battles have little significance to what we will witness on Wednesday.
Putting the fact that PSV are favorites in the match aside, goals appear to be likely in this encounter given that PSV have seen their matches ending with both them and rivals scoring in six of their past eight European meetings. While we give the Eindhoven side the advantage here, both teams to score is our preferred pick for this qualifying tie. Bet3000, a bookmaker offering various betting bonuses (such as a 20% cashback bonus for sports betting), set odds of 1.90 for such a bet.
