Top five deals on the last day of the transfer window in Europe
The transfer window closed in most of the European countries on the night of October 5th-6th. Only Premier League clubs can sign new players, but as long as the transfers are from the English club or Russia where the transfer window will last until October 17.
There were free-agent signings and transfers of €50 million for a new player on the last day of the transfer window.
Squad strengthening for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer
English club Manchester United announced the signing of contracts with two Uruguayans on the last day of the transfer window. The first new arrival of the Red Devils was 33-year-old forward Edinson Cavani. The striker signed a contract until the end of the 2020/2021 season with the option of extending for another year.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the forward will earn 10 million euros in a year in England. This is the first free transfer in Cavani’s career, as his contract with PSG expired in the summer. The Uruguayan was close to moving to Benfica, but the Portuguese club was unable to meet the striker’s salary requests. During his career in Europe, Cavani changed three clubs: Palermo, Napoli and PSG. Now there appeared a new championship on his club career path. 86.5 million euros in total were paid for the transfer of the forward on the transfer market, taking into account his transfer from Danubio to Palermo.
Facundo Pellistri became the second Uruguayan in the team. The Red Devils paid €8.5 million for the 18-year-old Peñarol forward. The young footballer signed a five-year contract. The winger played 37 matches for Peñarol, scoring two goals and making four assists.
Manchester United spent 92.5 million euros in total on strengthening the squad, while earned only 15 million euros. The club’s budget was increased by selling 30-year-old Chris Smalling. Italian club Roma bought the defender for 15 million euros.
Arsenal will pay 50 million euros for a new player
London club Arsenal started with three wins and one defeat in the Premier League. Team’s coach Mikel Arteta convinced the club’s management of the need to strengthen the squad and got a new player for 50 million euros on the last day of the transfer window. Arsenal has triggered the automatic purchase option for Thomas Partey from Atlético.
Partey is a defensive midfielder, and the Transfermarkt portal estimates the player at 40 million euros. He will wear number 18 at Arsenal. The midfielder made 46 appearances for Atlético last season, scoring four goals and making one assist. Arsenal spent 86 million euros in total on strengthening the squad.
It is worth noting that Atlético found a player in the center of the field. Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira will play for the Madrid club next season.
Douglas Costa returns to Bayern
The 30-year-old Brazilian will spend the next season as a member of the Munich club. Juventus paid €40m for the midfielder in 2018, which was a record sale for Bayern Munich.
Douglas Costa was complimentary about his time in the club and said that he was glad to return to Munich. The midfielder has played in 77 matches for Bayern, scoring 14 goals and making 27 assists, while he played in 100 matches for Juventus, but his performance was lower. The German club did not pay any transfer fee but will pay the player’s salary in full. In Juventus, the midfielder earns 6 million euros, and his contract is valid for another two years. The German club will pay 12 million euros per one year of the player’s stay with Bayern.
The German club spent 64 million euros on strengthening the squad and most of it was spent on Leroy Sane from Manchester City. Bayern earned 22 million euros through sales.
Everton strengthens defense
After the early rounds of the English Premier League season, Everton unexpectedly became the leader of the Premier League. The Toffees led by Carlo Ancelotti, have won four out of four matches. During the summer transfer window, the English club spent 74.87 million euros on strengthening the squad while earning only 4.43 million from the sale of players.
Everton arranged the largest transfer during the last day in the current transfer window. The new arrival is a 22-year-old central defender Ben Godfrey from Norwich. Everton paid 27.5 million euros for the transfer, and the amount could rise to 33. Norwich has already confirmed that the transfer has become a club record.
The 22-year-old has already made his debut for the England national team and played three games. At the club level, he played in the Championship and the Football League Third Division. He made a total of 30 appearances in the Premier League.
Zenit parts with Rigoni
A new limit on the number of foreign players allowed has been imposed in the RPL, which made it more difficult for the clubs to strengthen their squads. No more than eight foreign players allowed in a team roster. On the last day of the transfer window, Zenit vacated a place for a foreign player. Emiliano Rigoni will spend the next year in Elche. The 27-year-old striker has left St. Petersburg since his contract is valid until the end of the 2020/2021 season.
After Rigoni’s departure, Zenit has two more weeks to arrange Wendel’s transfer from Sporting or some other player to the center of defense.
