NaVi Become Winners of CS: GO Major for First Time

Publication date:

The best CS: GO player of all time, Oleksandr ‘s1mple’ Kostyliev, finally welcomed to lift his first Major trophy after Natus Vincere defeated G2 Esports in the 2021 grand final of the most prestigious Counter-Strike tournament in the world, PGL Major, held in Stockholm, with a score of 2-0.

G2 Esports played great in the final, but that was not enough to prevent ‘s1mple’ and his teammates from reaching the long-awaited trophy. Esports betting sites kind of predicted such an outcome.

First Major in Two Years

It has been two years since the last CS: GO Major. Aside from the trophy, NaVi received a cash prize of $1,000,000 for their success. The Ukrainians began the tournament with a match against Heroic, the fifth team in the HLTV world rankings. ‘Born To Win’ prevailed on Ancient in a hard-fought game with a score of 16-11. Later, NaVi distinguished Virtus.pro’s hopes (16-4 on Overpass). The Ukrainian team advanced to the playoffs the next day, defeating Ninjas in Pyjamas (16-9 on Nuke and Overpass). All in all, NaVi had three wins in as many games in the Legends Stage.

The Champions Stage was approaching. Team Vitality was the first opponent of NaVi in the playoffs. Many people expected three maps in this match before it started, but ‘Born to Win’ made sure there are only two to be played. There was a CIS-derby in the final match: NaVi gave Gambit Esports only 11 rounds on two maps. Throughout the championship, NaVi met and defeated every team in the top five of the HLTV rankings.

The Course of the Grand Final

G2 tried to surprise NaVi, picking Ancient, but without success. ‘S1mple’ just didn’t want to let anyone stop him on the verge of realizing his dream and led NaVi to a 16-11 win with 32 frags. It was clear that G2 would have a terribly difficult task in the remainder of the encounter to stop NaVi on Nuke, the map on which the CIS team has been winning regularly lately, and to try to win the fight on Mirage, which was the third map.

G2 played bravely on the CT side. Audric ‘JaCkz’ Jug, who didn’t stand out too much during the Major when it comes to frags, was great and there seemed to be hope for G2 at 10-5 at halftime. Of course, everyone knew that it would be difficult for G2 when NaVi switched to the CT side, but G2 continued to play well and came to a huge advantage of 14-8. That is when many hoped that a big surprise was on the doorstep. But, unfortunately for their fans, G2 stopped there. They had a chance to win. Nikola ‘NiKo’ Kovač missed the key pick on ‘s1mple’ near the end of the map, end NaVi managed to earn overtime.

G2 opened the first overtime with a victory. NaVi then took a few rounds. In the end, Nemanja ‘huNter’ Kovač and ‘NiKo’ kept G2 afloat and the second overtime took place. François ‘AmaNEk’ Delaunay brought the first round to his team with three kills in a row, but NaVi played better both in defense and attack, which brought them a 22-19 victory in the fifth round of the second overtime.

Stockholm Major Breaks All Viewership Records

Natus Vincere achieved historic success with a triumph on the Major without losing a single game, proving that they are really the best team in the world at the moment. With over 2.57 million viewers, PGL Major Stockholm broke all viewership records and showed that CS: GO eSport is more popular than ever.

After a well-deserved break, NaVi will compete in the BLAST Premier Fall Finals 2021, which will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from November 24-28.
